Hydrogen powered cars - the best fuel saving option for future
Fuel prices are rising continuously and their alternatives are now seriously being contemplated. Cars that can run on electricity, hydrogen, even water are being conceptualized. Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources and at one point, we'll run out of them. So, it is of utmost importance that we start giving serious thoughts on every possible alternatives to the ever diminishing fossil fuels.
If we all are looking forward to cost-effective drive, then hydrogen cars are the best alternative to diesel & petrol cars. These cars use hydrogen gas as fuel, which is already proving to be a great alternative. In many cars today, hydrogen fuel is used as a secondary fuel option. But an equal number of cars have started using hydrogen gas as they have enhanced fuel economy and advanced features. After you've purchased a hydrogen powered vehicle, you no longer need to spend huge sums of money on petrol or diesel.
There are mixed views of people on hydrogen cars - some feel it'll be too early for them to comment on it as the number of hydrogen powered cars are not much and they are yet to see if they can really be successful. While some others feel that hydrogen cars are the future. Many environmentalists feel the same and they're quite sure that we'll be driving hydrogen cars in future.
Hydrogen cars
Hydrogen from water being the main source of fuel supply in these cars, runs the internal combustion engine in these cars or they are powered by electric hydrogen fuel cells. The internal combustion in hydrogen cars is a slightly modified version of the conventional gasoline internal combustion engine.
Hydrogen fuel cells are devices producing electricity by using hydrogen and chemicals which react with each other at two electrical terminals, thus producing electricity to power the car. Due to the only byproducts being water vapor in hydrogen cars, they can boast of zero emissions leading us to a better environment.
Apart from being environment friendly, hydrogen cars are very cost-effective in comparison to gasoline driven cars. You practically don't have to spend money after purchasing these cars. This makes hydrogen cars a perfect choice for many individuals. One can even transform their petrol or diesel cars into hydrogen cars by installing a fuel cell kit known as the gas conversion kit. These kits are easily available in the market these days and they are not costly at all. They are also very easy to install with minimal complexity. Though taking help from automobile experts is always suggested in order to consider all the necessary precautions while installing gas conversion kits.
Most of the car manufacturers have done some research on using this technology in their cars. Many of them believe that the R&D involved in this technology is proving to be very expensive and this will affect the hydrogen car prices. Experts believe that the prices of hydrogen cars can go up to as much as 10 times than the conventional cars powered by gasoline. It is a good step forward nevertheless. Though some manufacturers have stopped working on hydrogen-powered cars, many are still trying to work figure out a way to use this technology which will eventually lower down the running costs involved. Honda, Toyota, Daimler, Ford, Renault are all working their way forward and have invested hugely in their efforts to develop hydrogen powered cars.
Manufacturers are trying to outdo each other in embracing this technology. But, it is still a log way to go for hydrogen cars to be mass-produced and eventually affordable. Toyota, in July 2009 had said that it'll probably be ready to surprise the industry and the world by introducing these cars at affordable prices and stun everyone as to how they were actually successful in achieving such a cost reduction.
Hydrogen cars are the future
Electric & fuel cell vehicles impressively cut down on emissions from gasoline cars and have proven to be environmental friendly. In order to keep the emission levels genuinely minimal, we need use renewable energy resources like hydropower. These are the only two ways to ensure zero emission - one is to use electric cars and the other to use fuel cells or hydrogen cars. Also, hydrogen cars are not too heavy on the pocket as far as running costs are concerned. They will be considerably cheaper than the gasoline prices.
Another benefit of using hydrogen cars is that the strength and the durability of the engine is quite good. In high temperatures, most the engines tend to overheat and hydrogen engines can work in quite high temperatures. Also, the chances of corrosion in hydrogen engines is very less, as compared gasoline engines.
Although things might seem difficult when you consider the cost of hydrogen cars, the availability of hydrogen fuel and also the storage. It does take an enormous space in order to store liquid hydrogen fuel. There is research going on, on ways to figure out storage in more effective manner in vehicles. These small issues can certainly be taken good care of, considering the advantages of using hydrogen powered vehicles. They certainly are the future of automobile.
